The Bilbies
Fact-checking policy
Before we publish, we check what we tell. Here is how.
Where our facts come from
- Science and wildlifePublished studies, universities, museums and conservation organizations. We prefer the original study to the article that summarizes it.
- Health and careVeterinary manuals, veterinary associations and veterinary schools.
- Rescue storiesThe post by the people who lived it (the family, the rescuer or the organization) or the interview another outlet did with them. We always say where it comes from and link to it.
How we check
- We compare every figure with its source before publishing. If it is not in the source, it does not go in.
- When two sources disagree, we go with the most direct and reliable one.
- We separate what is proven from what is still a hypothesis, and we say so in the text.
- We tell the facts in our own words and link the source so you can read it.
What we don’t do
- We do not present as science something that is not proven.
- We do not make up quotes or interviews. If someone wrote it in a post, we say they wrote it; if they told it to an outlet, we say which one.
- We do not give diagnoses. Our health guides help you understand and decide when to see a vet.
